CLL Team 51 News and Snack Stand Duties
by posted 05/03/2022

Hi everyone,

It's been great seeing the team progress over the past month after getting practices and games under our belt.  As promised, we're now playing games versus Jenkinton-Abington Little League, and our schedule has been finalized.  Please arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to game time for warmups.  Also, please remind your players they should all be wearing athletic cups for their own protection at this age.  We also have a shortage of catchers, so I want to rotate everyone through that position, and you absolutely need to wear a cup.

This Thursday, May 5 at 6pm, our game is AWAY at SPS Fields, Located at Highland Ave and Kenmoore Ave in Glenside (across from the SPS Building).  Arrive at 5:30pm  (We have one other away game: June 4th)

Below is the remainder of the snack stand schedule.  Again, when you signed your player up, you agreed to volunteer for 3 shifts.  All I'm asking for is 1 or 2.  We need parents to work the stand.  It's a simple job, and takes only a few hours of your time.  As a bonus, the window faces Field 2, so you can watch your son play while volunteering.  Thank you to those families who have already volunteered!

Snack Stand Duty Updates are as follows:

Team 51 Snack Stand Schedule:

  • Sat, May 7, 10:30 AM: Dereck Almonte-Perez family
  • Sat, May 14, 10:30 AM: RJ Firmin family
  • Thurs, May 19, 06:00 PM: Gavin Small family
  • Sat, May 21, 01:00 PM: Jayden Johnson family
  • Wed, May 25, 06:00 PM: James Oswald family
  • Thu, Jun 2, 06:00 PM: Oliver Leary family

CLL Team 51 Update 4/13
by posted 04/13/2022

Hi everyone,

Today should be great weather for a baseball game.  Please arrive no later than 5:30pm for warmups.  We're short staffed tonight, so I need some volunteers to coach bases.

Also, please remind your players they should all be wearing athletic cups for their own protection at this age.  We also have a shortage of catchers, so I want to rotate everyone through that position, and you absolutely need to wear a cup.

I'm on vacation next week, but we'll still have practice on Monday night from 6-7:30, and then a game Thursday 4/21 at 6pm and Saturday 4/23 at 9am.  PJ Quinn will need some volunteers to help coach bases and/or maintain order in the dugout.

I do not have any updates on games beyond April 23.  Our league is setting up a schedule with Jenkintown Abington Little League.  If it gets set, you'll see games pop up in the Sports Sign Up Play app.

Snack Stand Duties are as follows:

Team 51 Snack Stand Schedule:

  • Sat, Apr 2, 01:30 PM - 03:30 PM: Dereck Almonte-Perez family (No Show - family will be rescheduled)
  • Wed, Apr 6, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: Max Cassano family (Rainout.  Rescheduled to 4/23)
  • Sat, Apr 9, 01:00 PM - 03:00 PM: Patrick DeBelle family (TJ Miller Jumped in to help).
  • Wed, Apr 13, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: RJ Firmin family (Not sure if the stand is open tonight, but we can use help since the Firmins are on vacation)
  • Thu, Apr 21, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: Liam Fox family
  • Sat, Apr 23, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM: Dylan Miller family (Change to Cassano family because Miller covered 4/9)

CLL Team 51 Update

Hi everyone,

Great game on Saturday - I was impressed with everyone's effort considering we've only had one practice.  We have another game tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6pm on Field 2.  Please arrive no later than 5:30pm for warm ups.  Depending on weather, we may have to postpone the game.  If we do, I will communicate with the team via email or text.  I suggest downloading the Sports Sign Up Play app.  I am using it to send out text messages to the team, such as field status.

Our league is attempting to fill out the second half of the season games with games against Jenkintown / Abington Little League, so expect to see some more games pop up on our schedule.

Reminder, snack stand duties are as follows... and as more game are added, we'll add more families.

  • Wed, Apr 6, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: Max Cassano family
  • Sat, Apr 9, 01:00 PM - 03:00 PM: Patrick DeBelle family
  • Wed, Apr 13, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: RJ Firmin family
  • Thu, Apr 21, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: Liam Fox family
  • Sat, Apr 23, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM: Dylan Miller family

Thanks

Dennis

CLL Team 51 - Snack Stand
by posted 03/29/2022

Team 51 parents, as mentioned in previous emails, Cheltenham Little League’s success is built upon our volunteers.  Parents and families have to act as good role models for our kids and one of those ways is to help our league out by working at the snack stand.  When you signed your player up, you agreed to volunteer at least 3 shifts.  In the past, I’ve attempted to use a Signup genius for families to choose games, but due to lack of participation, I will not be doing that this year and I’m assigning families to games.  Families must provide at least one volunteer (at least 16 years old) to work the 2 hour gametime shift.  If your date does not fit your schedule, please switch with another family by reaching out to other parents via email or chatting with them during practice / games at the field.

Personnel from the league are going to be checking fields prior to games to identify any teams that do not have volunteers in the snack stand.  Games will then be delayed / halted until volunteers are in place in the stand.  Please don’t let that happen to our team.

As games are added to the schedule, those families who are not on the original list will be added.

Team 51 Snack Stand Schedule:

  • Sat, Apr 2, 01:30 PM - 03:30 PM: Dereck Almonte-Perez family
  • Wed, Apr 6, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: Max Cassano family
  • Sat, Apr 9, 01:00 PM - 03:00 PM: Patrick DeBelle family
  • Wed, Apr 13, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: RJ Firmin family
  • Thu, Apr 21, 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM: Liam Fox family
  • Sat, Apr 23, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM: Dylan Miller family

Thanks,

Dennis

Welcome to CLL Team 51!
by posted 03/22/2022

Welcome to the Cheltenham Little League Intermediate Team 51,

I’m Dennis Bieryla, the head coach, and PJ Quinn will be my assistant.  We’re hoping for a good year of fun and player development.  The intermediate division is made up of 11 and 12 year olds.  We play on Field 2, which is a step up from the minors on Field 3.  The rules in Intermediates also progress to include straight stealing and dropped 3rd strikes.  We’ll teach these to all the players this year.  PJ and I are the coaches and we expect players to show up on time and be ready to play, and positive support from parents.

Opening Day is Saturday April 2nd, which is coming up fast.  Our team schedule is partially complete, with games setup against the 3 other CLL teams, but we anticipate adding more against Jenkintown-Abington LL.

This is going to be a long email containing a ton of information, so bear with me.  If you have any questions, hit me up with an email or phone call / text at 215-880-0754.

Schedules:

  • If you’re looking to get the latest schedule feed downloaded to your Outlook / Gmail / iphone calendar, you can go to this link from cheltenhamlittleleague.org: http://leagueathletics.com/schedule.asp?teams=720856&org=cheltenhamlittleleague.org.  Go to the “Options” button, and click “Calendar Feed” and choose what you’d like.  This is suuuuuper helpful for me, personally.
  • Practices will be on Mondays from 6pm – 7ish on Field 2 starting Monday March 28th.  We will be combining with another intermediate team to maximize the instruction efficiency.  For the first week or 2 we’ll also have practices on Wednesday from 6pm – 7ish on Field 2, starting March 30th.  We want to get a few practices in before opening day.  PJ and I expect every player to attend all practices.  If you will not make a practice, please inform PJ or me.
  • Games:  Currently scheduled for a mix of Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays.  Players are expected to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to gametime in order to stretch and warmup.  All players are expected to attend every game.  This is a developmental league, so we will rotate players around the field positions.  If you will be late or miss a game, please inform PJ or me.  Please avoid showing up at gametime and then expecting your player to start the game… the coaches have to develop a lineup for the game in advance.

 Volunteering:

  • CLL is a volunteer-run organization.  Some of us spend 5 or 6 days a week at the fields among the teams we’re involved with, whether it’s coaching, cutting grass, emptying the trash, etc.  We do this because we enjoy it; we like to pay it forward and pass on any leadership and baseball skills on to the players.   Our organization always needs more volunteers.  Don’t be afraid to step up and meet new people.  When parents signed their players up, parents agreed to volunteer at least 3 slots.  PJ and I will be assigning snack stand duties to each family in a future email.  We also appreciate help such as raking the fields, cleaning up, etc.
    • With that being said, field cleanup continues this weekend.  Saturday March 26 from 9-3 and Sunday March 27 from 10-2.  League officials will be on hand to guide volunteers on jobs.  Parents and players can attend to help get fields ready to play.

Recommended equipment for practices and games:

  • Bat stamped with “USABaseball” logo.  All other branded bats are not permitted for use.  We have some team bats if you don’t have one.  Players shall not use other players’ bats without the bat owner’s permission.  Parents are paying upwards of $300 per bat these days.  Parents of players with bats, please let your player know this… it is perfectly fine to say to a teammate “No, I’d rather you not use my bat.”  Please let your player know to not be offended if a bat owner does not allow your player to use their bat.
  • Helmet.  We have some team helmets if you don’t have one.
  • Glove.
  • Baseball cleats.  At this age group, players still are not permitted to wear metal spikes.
  • Pants.  Yes, I know it can get warm some days and kids want to wear shorts the first time it hits 50 degrees outside, but we will practice sliding.  Pants are always recommended for any baseball practice, even throughout the summer.
  • All players are encouraged to wear a athletic supporter / cup for obvious reasons.
  • A hat.  We want the players to “look” like ballplayers, so please remember to wear a hat to practice.

That's about it for now, please reach out to PJ or I if you have any questions.  Let's get ready to have some fun and play ball!

Dennis
